Testimonials

Kate Skarratt, Australian Champion Surfer

My name is Kate Skarratt. I have been a competitive surfer for 9 years and previously a top 16 surfer on the World Championship Tour for 7 years. I won the prestigious big wave WCT event in Tahiti in 1999 and other events such as the Margaret River Masters and Nias Open. In 2001 I performed in the Universal Pictures production, Blue Crush in a role as myself and as a stunt double. For one of my stunts in this film I was nominated for ‘Best Female Stunt’ at the World Stunt Awards. Through out the last year I have also taken on the role as a TV host on the Fuel Channel.

As you can see I spend my life in the outdoors. No matter where I am in the world I usually surf everyday and if I can’t get to the beach I go swimming at a pool. Obviously I have to be careful about getting sunburnt, but over the years it has bothered me that I need to use so much sun cream. I have always been concerned that I am doing more harm than good by using the typical brands of sun cream that contain potentially harmful chemicals. When I heard about UV Natural I was honestly REALLY excited. A natural way to protect my skin from the sun!

Now I don’t need to hesitate when I need sun cream and I don’t get burnt. It is a fantastic brand that I have been recommending to all the athletes I am associated with. I also use the UV tanning product to as a oil for to re-hydrate my face after I surf. I am great supporter of UV Natural and would recommend it to anyone!

Mel Redman-Carr,  Australian Champion Surfer

Thanks for the product! It all fits, and I have been using it all the time.

I find the sunscreen works really well, smells good and is nice on the skin. I feel pleased every time I put it on that I am making an improvement to my skin with all the good ingredients and knowing that I am avoiding all the harsh chemicals of other sun creams.

I highly recommend UV Natural as the sunscreen that all should use. Not only is it effective to screen the sun's harmful rays, it has made an improvement to the texture of my skin.

What About Other Sunscreens that "CLAIM" Natural and Eco-Friendly? There are people wearing chemical titanium-based sunscreens who have been told that their sunscreens are non-chemical. The truth is ~ titanium dioxide acts chemically to absorb 70% of sunlight, and this absorption process damages DNA, creates free radical damage, assaults the immune system and more. Titanium dioxide is a chemical UV filter with associated health hazards. It is not a physical UV reflector like zinc oxide. Titanium is touted as a mineral sunscreen, but this mean nothing to your health and safety. Not all minerals are harmless. Titanium is a much less expensive sunscreen ingredient than zinc that is easier for chemists to work with than zinc to achieve high SPF. Those are the two main reasons why titanium appears in so many sunscreens that you might have thought were good for you. It is true that most sunscreen companies using titanium are not bad people trying to fool the public. They have just consulted with the same old sunscreen chemists who haven't done the research and haven't been able to create proper all-zinc sunscreens.

Now, just because a sunscreen contains "some" zinc oxide doesn't mean you're safe either. The only safe sunscreens contain ONLY zinc oxide as their active ingredients. There are very few 100% clean SPF 30+ sunscreens on the open market today. The one with the longest water- and sweat-resistance is UV Natural. All other highly water- and sweat-resistant sunscreen products on the market  ~ work on outdated technology using chemical UV boosters to achieve high SPF. UV Natural is in a class all its own!

THE ECO QUESTION: UV Natural is the only extremely high-performance choice for the true eco-lover who demands paramount performance without chemical runoff to upset the environment!
UV Natural is already a hit with the most natural-minded outdoor enthusiasts. But many health- and eco-minded people are still using less-than-healthy, eco-disrupting sunscreens! UV Natural really IS the sunscreen that will not harm you or precious wildlife when you skindive or surf near coral reefs. Chemical sunscreen ingredients change the DNA of fish and other wildlife, alter their hormones and worse.

Other brands claim to be eco-friendly, but sunscreens containing active ingredients other than naturally coated zinc oxide are neither people- nor eco-friendly. Don't be fooled. We only know of three remotely water-ready eco-friendly sunscreen brands on the market today. And UV Natural is the only one you can wear for 4 hours in the water, no problem!

Research on the harm done to wildlife and the environment by titanium dioxide and other chemical sunscreen ingredients abounds. Check out www.sunscreenresearch.com for real facts about sunscreen. Chemical absorbing sunscreens do not belong on people or in any corner of the globe for swimming, snorkeling, surfing or mixing with wildlife.

Please, spread the word to help your friends and our environment!  Encourage those you know to get real about preserving themselves and our ecology by using truly eco-friendly sunscreen themselves. And if they choose UV Natural, they're getting the healthiest AND most-effective sunscreen all in one! Perfect for ocean, snow and sweat-drenched activity! Never runs or rubs off. Won't sting your eyes or clog your pores. But forget all that. UV Natural blocks UVA, UVB, UVC using the best sunscreen ingredient known in the highest percentage known ~ 24.8% zinc oxide.

Most people couldn't imagine that a natural, completely physical sunscreen would really go the distance for 6 hours + of surfing near the equator or 6+ hours on cycling through Africa or 6+ hours on ski slopes across the world.

UV Natural does all of this ~ and won't harm you in the process! UV Natural IS the future in sunscreen!

Ingredients!

  • Zinc Oxide 24.8% - Acts as a broad-spectrum UVA,B & C deflector. It assists in the growth & repair of skin tissue. Is non-photo reactive & will not produce hydrox yl ions (free radicals). Optimally formulated particles that will not enter the bloodstream or affect serum levels. Our zinc is also coated with ingredients from natural coconut oil. Coated zinc is the only 100% eco-friendly sunscreen.

  • Grape Seed Extract- Promotes cell repair, growth and is one of the most powerful antioxidants known.  Provides a source of Vit D and assists in protection against free radical damage from UV radiation.

  • Green Tea - Ranks up there with Grape Seed Extract as being one of the most powerful antioxidants available. An anti-inflammatory and a natural disinfectant - research in 1997 suggests that concentrations of the extract topically applied provided significant anti melanoma protection.

  • Grape Seed Oil - Significantly more antioxidant activity than Vitamin C, E and Beta Carotene.  Contains the highest amount of Linoleic Acid of all oils.

  • Macadamia Oil - Closest in comparison to the oil we lose from our skin as we age. Nourishes the skin and locks in moisture-replenishing fatty acids.  Prevents and reduces signs of aging.  Works in conjunction with the antioxidants to retain the integrity of the collagen and elastin in preventing wrinkles and aging.

  • Natural Vitamin E - Protects body tissues from breakdown and signs of photo aging. Excellent moisturizer and has scar healing qualities.

  • Zinc Stearate -Used as a water- repellent protective ingredient to treat acne, eczema and other skin diseases.

  • Silica - An element required for the proper functioning of the enzyme prolyhydroxylase. High in various minerals, silica helps to remineralize the skin, and it also has a softening effect. Silica can improve the appearance of the skin, hair, and nails by its action on connective tissue.

Natural sunscreens from Down Under make their way to San Clemente

Ever find yourself struggling to pronounce the ingredients in your sunscreen? What is all of that stuff anyway? Apparently, the Australians have also been wondering about that because two San Clemente companies offer natural sunscreens from the Land Down Under. These sunscreens are filled with ingredients that look more like a shopping list for a health food store. In fact, some sound downright mouth watering, like cucumber and green tea extracts and macadamia oil. They are free from chemicals, petroleum by-products, synthetic preservatives and artificial fragrances, making them ideal for people with sensitive skin as well as health-minded consumers. And because their zinc oxide particles are super small, you won’t get that ghostly white glow that blinds everyone at the beach. Now that’s a good thing for everybody.

                                                                           The San Clemente Times
UV Natural USA

Not sure if natural sunscreens really work? Well, recent studies could convince even the biggest skeptic. The Environmental Working Group studied 786 sunscreens sold in the United States, including popular name brands. It found that the No. 1 safest and most effective sunscreen was UV Natural—based right here in San Clemente. (See Web site in “Hot Links” below for full report.)

Dr. Tony Kovacs, president of UV Natural USA, was a naturopath in Australia when he ran across this sunscreen at a flea market. “I never liked wearing sunscreen in the past,” he says, “because of all of the chemicals and stuff in them.” He tried UV Natural and liked it so much that he decided to bring it to America.

In 2004, Kovacs started UV Natural USA in Las Vegas; however, this lifelong surfer found himself too far from the ocean. So, the next year he moved the company to San Clemente to be closer to the waves and his friends.

UV Natural USA is the exclusive North American distributor of UV Natural products. It carries a range of broad-spectrum sunscreens, including baby and adult formulas that are safe for the whole family, even infants under six months, ultra and sport varieties that offer long-lasting 30 SPF water- and sweat-resistant protection and a 15 SPF formula.

Kovacs says that the products have had a huge following from people who need an alternative to chemical sunscreens, like mothers with children who have autism or ADD, people with skin conditions like melasma, and those who have had organ transplants and are using immunosuppressive drugs. “It’s good to know that now there’s something they can use,” he says.

UV Natural USA’s sales director, Holly Watson, met Kovacs last September while surfing in the Lowers lineup. “I tried UV Natural, loved it and dropped everything to start selling it in October,” says Watson. “Finally, I can surf for four hours straight with no eye sting, sunburn, melasma, breakouts or weathered sea-hag skin.”

Her favorite products include UV Natural Ultra/Golf, because it rubs in the fastest, and the new UV Natural Sport, because the silica, lavender, sandalwood and patchouli help to reduce her fine lines and blemishes. “They’re both off the chart with antioxidants and zinc oxide for UVA/B/C protection,” she adds. “People take their UV Natural everywhere from Africa to Bali and tell us they never get burned,” says Watson. “UV Natural is also eco-friendly. My latest surf quote is: ‘Safe for the surfer, safe for the sea!’”

OTHER ARTICLES SHOWING UV NATURAL AS #1…

The FDA has known the wild world of sun-protection products needs some oversight since it promised to set mandatory safety standards for sunscreen in the 1970s, back when sun worshipers still fried themselves in baby oil. But almost three decades later, despite some class-action lawsuits, prods from senators and more evidence that sun exposure leads to skin cancer, we're still waiting for official guidance.

Meanwhile, to fill the gap and help consumers find the best sunscreen, the advocacy group recently launched its sunscreen investigation and rating system, which is part of the group's searchable "Skin Deep" cosmetic safety database of more than 20,000 products.

The assessment rates and ranks the best, worst and top-selling sunscreens. It also lists which products are appropriate for children and babies, which ones have good UVA protection and which are nano-particle free.

(Many zinc and titanium-based sunscreens contain nano-size particles, something that isn't necessarily on the label. And although the group's analysis unexpectedly found zinc- and titanium-based products to be among the safest and most effective, the report says, "there are still concerns about the overall safety and oversight of nanotechnology as well as impacts to workers and the environment.")

In addition to ranking name-brand products, the study also dispels some common misconceptions about sunscreen.

Most consumers, for example, rate sunscreen effectiveness based on its sun-protection factor, or SPF, which refers to the product's ability to screen the sun's burning rays. But SPF refers only to protection against UVB rays. It doesn't include UVA, which we now know penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB radiation and can also cause skin cancer and wrinkles.

So even though a product boasts a high SPF factor, or a "broad spectrum" marketing claim, it might offer little protection against UVA rays. Products with the poorest UVA rating included Neutrogena Sunblock Lotion (SPF 30), Neutrogena UVA/UVB Sunblock Lotion and Coppertone Sport Sunblock lotion (trigger spray), according to the EWG analysis.

Moreover, SPF 50 sunscreens provide just 1.3 percent more protection from UVB rays than SPF 30 sunscreens. That's why it's more important to apply sunscreen generously than to rely on products with ultra-high SPF ratings.

In Europe, the new labeling will include a standard UVA logo so consumers will know whether the products protect against both kinds of rays. They've also standardized terms such as "low," "medium," "high" and "very high" protection, depending on the SPF.

Both ideas are worth considering here.

Here are the EWG's five most effective and safest sunscreens:

1. UV Natural Sport SPF 30 +
2.
Badger SPF 30 3. Peter Thomas Roth Titanium Dioxide Sunblock SPF 30 4. Lavera Sun Screen Neutral SPF 40 5. Vanicream Sunscreen Sport (formerly Sunscreen SPF 35) SPF 35.

Bottom five

1. L'Oreal Dermo-Expertise Line Eraser, Pure Retinol, Daily Treatment with SPF 15 2. B. Kamins Chemist Bio-Maple day cream SPF 15 3. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion with SPF 15 4. B. Kamins Chemist Day Cream SPF 15 5. Caren et Cie Face Treatment (French Vanilla) SPF 15.

A 'Best' And 'Worst' List

Published July 2, 2007

It has been almost 30 years since the Food and Drug Administration last updated rules regulating the safety and effectiveness of sunscreens.

In the years since, manufacturers have made misleading claims for many products, some of them containing hazardous and ineffective ingredients, according to the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit advocacy group based in Washington dedicated to protecting public health and the environment.

EWG compares 783 sunscreens at the Web site http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com, with analysis of what the scientific literature and databases of hazardous chemicals have to say about products' listed ingredients.

Of those 783 sunscreens, it recommends 128, issues a caution on 618 and names 37 it says should be avoided. Eighty-four percent of the products, it concludes, don't offer adequate protection from the sun's harmful rays or have unsafe ingredients.

Products ranked as best have both UVA and UVB protection and stable and long-lasting ingredients. They include Badger SPF 30 and UV Natural Sport SPF 30+. The 37 "worst" don't offer UVA protection, break down rapidly and contain allergens or other problem ingredients.

Banana Boat, the maker of Suntanicals Sunscreen Lotion -- listed on EWG's "worst" list as containing ingredients linked to cancer and developmental or reproductive toxicity -- declined to comment.

Julie Lux, a spokesman for Schering Plough, the maker of Coppertone, said she couldn't imagine why EWG made the same charges about her company's Sport Sunblock Lotion (Ultra Sweatproof). "All our products are rigorously tested both in the lab and in the real world to ensure they provide safe, effective and superior protection," she said.

The Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, the trade group for sunscreen makers, called the EWG Web site "reckless" and defended the safety and efficacy of its members' products.

Is Your Sunscreen More Dangerous than the Sun?

August 2, 2007

SYDNEY, Australia, Aug. 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Despite increased education to become sun smart the incidence of skin cancer appears to be rising.According to the Skin Cancer Foundation more than 600,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year and the figure is rising. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and is responsible for 8,500 deaths annually.A hypothesis for this phenomenon is that harmful chemicals lurking in sunscreens are doing more harm than good.International studies found the greatest rise in melanoma occurred in countries where chemical sunscreens are heavily promoted.Shirley Livesay, founder and developer of naturally derived sunscreen range UV Natural says, \"Research suggests that commercially available sunscreens might damage people's skin.\" A finding supported by the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) June 2007 study where 785 sunscreens were analyzed and 84% provided inadequate protection from the sun's harmful rays or contained ingredients with safety concerns. One range stood out--EWG ranked UV Natural #1 safest and most effective sunscreen. Some experts suggest that sunscreen formula may be cancer causing. The harmful chemicals identified include allergy-creating PABA, benzophenone-3, homosalate, octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC) and 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4-MBC). While these chemicals protect skin from sun damage, experts have indicated the chemical octyl methoxycinnamate, which is present in 90% of sunscreen brands, was found to kill mouse cells even at low doses. Recent studies on childhood illnesses linked these findings to a possible cause of ADHD, asthma and allergies. Some sunscreen ingredients also change estrogen levels in the body affecting DNA and causing cell damage by creating free radicals. As a result of these astonishing findings and increased consumer demand Shirley Livesay has created a naturally derived sunscreen range which has no harmful ingredients for longevity, fragrance or moisturising purposes.UV Natural consists of: powerful anti-oxidants such as green tea and grape seed extract; macadamia, grape seed and colloidal Silica to fight environmental stressors; moisturising and skin-conditioning oils; and vitamin E to assist with skin reconstruction at a cellular level. This combination of ingredients is suitable for all skin types and will help combat the signs of photo ageing. The UV Natural range is a result of extensive research and development and features a new and improved formula that is non-greasy, gentle, hydrating and moisturising. Products include: SPF 15, SPF 30+, Baby, Sport and in September 2007: Lip Sunscreen, Sport Lip Sunscreen and Sun & Body Oil. In addition to being naturally derived, these products have been tested and proven to have a sensitivity rating of zero which makes them ideal for all skin types. UV Natural products are cruelty free and stringently adhere to Food and Drug Administration (USA) requirements.*Ranked #1 safest and most effective sunscreen in a US study of 785 sunscreens by the Environmental Working Group.

http://www.gizmag.com/go/7762/

August 9, 2007 In sun-drenched regions the skin protection message has been strongly delivered for years: overexposure equals skin cancer. Despite the warnings to cover up the Skin Cancer Foundation warns that more than 600,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. and skin cancer is responsible for 8,500 deaths annually. Paradoxically, sunscreens themselves have been identified as a contributing factor in this dilemma, with new products like UV Natural promoting themselves as a safe alternative to other creams on the market which may be doing more harm than good in the ongoing battle against the sun’s harmful rays.

In 2007 the Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzed 785 sunscreens and its findings suggest that some problems may arise are not due to the avoidance of sunscreen, but the very use of it. The results showed that an alarming 84 per cent provided inadequate protection from the sun or contained ingredients that raised safety concerns. The harmful chemicals identified include allergy-creating PABA, benzophenone-3, homosalate, octyl-methoxycinnamate (OMC) and 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4- MBC). These chemical provide excellent sun protection, however experts have indicated that OMC, found in most sunscreen brands, was found to kill mouse cells even at low doses.

There is a solution to protecting yourself from harmful toxins and the sun’s rays, a naturally derived sunscreen from UV Natural. Ranked the number one sunscreen by the EWG, UV Natural consists of natural ingredients such as green tea, grape seed extract; macadamia and vitamin E to help protect and restore sun-damaged skin. Products include: SPF 15, SPF 30+, Baby, Sport and in September 2007: Lip Sunscreen, Sport Lip Sunscreen and Sun and Body Oil.

This is not the first major breakthrough in sunscreen in recent times, researchers in Australia have used Nanotechnology to adopt new principles for skin protection. The new technology enables a cream with the high density protection of a traditional, thick, zinc application to appear on the skin as a clear substance.

It does seem however, that toxic chemicals in commercial sunscreen are not the only cancer risk associated with the “slip, slop, slap” message of sun protection. In Australiareports indicate that there has been a significant increase in Vitamin D deficiencies among the population attributed to lack of direct sunlight. Wearing sunscreen not only blocks out harmful UV rays but also Vitamin D which is essential for calcium absorption and bone density. Further, scientists believe that there is a connection between breast, colon and prostate cancer and a lack of Vitamin D.

So whilst it is important to avoid overexposure to sun and reduce the amount of chemicals we slather on our skin, we also need to be aware that a little sunshine here and there is vital to our ongoing health and wellbeing.

What's new

Some sunscreens ineffective

Many brand-name sunscreens offer inadequate protection from the sun's harmful rays, and some may contain ingredients that are health hazards, according to a recent analysis of 785 sunscreen products.

Only 17 percent of the products on the market are both safe and effective, meaning they block both types of ultraviolet radiation, remain stable in sunlight and contain few, if any, ingredients with significant known or suspected health hazards, according to The Environmental Working Group.

The Washington D.C.-based nonprofit research organization has developed the first-ever online database that rates sunscreen safety and effectiveness at www.ewg.org/sunscreen/. Its ratings are based on protection levels against UVA radiation -- the more deeply penetrating rays linked to skin damage and aging and potentially skin cancer -- as well as product stability and potential health hazards of ingredients.

"Research was based on three factors: nearly 400 peer-reviewed studies of the 17 sunscreen chemicals approved for U.S. use, an analysis of sunscreen-ingredient toxicity tied to 60 industry and government databases on chemical hazards, and product evaluations of protection from UVA and UVB radiation, which is the primary cause of sunburn."

The Web site includes "best," "worst" and top-selling product lists. UV Natural Sport SPF 30 tops the best list, and six products share the worst score.

The study found 12 percent of high SPF sunscreens with ratings of at least 30 protect only from sunburn (UVB radiation) and do not contain ingredients known to protect from UVA radiation.

The organization's analysis also found 54 percent of products on the market contain ingredients that may be unstable alone or in combination, raising questions about whether they last as long as the label says.

Sonya Lunder, senior analyst of the organization, said sunscreens with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide provide strong UVA protection and are contained in many of the top-rated products.

The Environmental Working Group criticized some sunscreen ingredients, saying they absorb into the blood and are linked to toxic effects. Some release skin-damaging free radicals, some act like estrogen and could disrupt hormone systems, the study said.
